What to do if you suspect malpractice in an emergency room

On Behalf of Weston Smith Law, PLLC | Sep 18, 2024 | Medical Malpractice

When you go to the emergency room, you expect to receive effective treatment for your urgent health needs. However, mistakes can happen, and sometimes these errors have serious consequences. These can include misdiagnosis, delayed treatment, or even errors in medication.

Such mistakes may even rise to the level of medical malpractice. This type of negligence occurs when healthcare providers fail to meet a reasonable standard of care. If you believe that you or a loved one has experienced medical malpractice in a Florida ER, it’s important to know what steps you can take to protect yourself and your family.

Document everything

The first thing you should do if you suspect negligence in an emergency room is to document everything. Keep detailed notes about your experience, including the names of the doctors and nurses, the time and date of your visit, and any instructions or diagnoses you received.

If possible, take pictures of any visible injuries or conditions. Collecting this information as soon as possible will help you remember details and provide a clear timeline of events.

Seek a second opinion

After you leave the emergency room, it’s a good idea to seek a second opinion. Visit another healthcare provider to confirm your diagnosis and treatment plan. This can help you determine if the care you received in the ER was appropriate or if the staff made mistakes. A second opinion can also provide valuable insight into the way the team should have handled your case.

Monitor your condition

Continue to monitor your condition closely after your ER visit. If you notice any worsening symptoms or complications, seek medical attention immediately. Keep a record of any new symptoms, treatments, or changes in your health. This information can be helpful if you need to take further action later.

If you think that medical malpractice occurred in a Florida emergency room, taking the right steps quickly can make all the difference. As a result, you can protect your health and address any potential negligence.
